Abstract The archaeological heritage in Bolivia is in permanent risk, reports and news regarding its damage and destruction are common. One of the main causes of this probiem is the lack of policies that prioritize its management, which results in insuffi-cient financial resources and technical-professional staff in the public bodies in charge of the issue. Cultural management is conditioned by legal regulations, so it is necessary to know the legislation on cultural heritage to genérate answers to the problems it faces. An approach to the legal regulations in Bolivia and the public policies proposed by the central level of the State regarding archaeological heritage is presented. Aspects related to the insti-tutional framework, the definition of competences and territorial planning are also addressed, due to their relevance for cultural management.
