Abstract The objective of this study is to test statistically whether the education of mothers is a more important social determinant than the economic status of households in reducing infant mortality. With information from the national demographic and health survey conducted in 2008 and using the Cox proportional hazards model, it is concluded that maternal education is a more important social determinant than the economic status of households in explaining the differences in the risk of mortality during the first year of life. As an indicator of the economic status of households, the wealth index was used. These results are consistent with those obtained in other studies and support the claim that education is the key to reducing infant mortality
